On June 17, the Specialized Environmental Prosecutor’s Office was established in Ukraine. This became known from an official announcement on the website of the Office of the Prosecutor General. The Head of this new office \u2013 Mr. Oleksii Melnyk was introduced during the meeting of Iryna Venediktova, Prosecutor General, with the representatives of public organizations in the field of environmental protection. It is assumed that the main function of the Environmental Prosecutor’s Office will be to strengthen the work on combating crimes against the environment.<\/p>\n

The European Business Association supports the need to strengthen the fight against environmental crime. Thus, in 2020, almost 80% of criminal offenses in the field of environment related to illegal logging, transportation, storage, and sale of forests, fishing, animal or other water extractive industries and violations of the rules of protection or use of subsoil. Moreover, according to the State Environment Inspectorate, the state suffers the greatest losses due to the illegal use of natural resources.<\/p>\n\t

We hope that the Environmental Prosecutor’s Office will be open to cooperation and dialogue with the business community and will adhere to the principles of the rule of law. At the same time, we invite the new head of the Specialized Environmental Prosecutor’s Office to a meeting with business to understand in detail the functionality of the structure, because now, in fact, there are more questions than answers.<\/p>\n
