For the first time in more than 5 years, Ukraine has started exporting unusable pesticides for proper disposal in compliance with international law.<\/span><\/p>\n

As of today, the total amount of hazardous waste removed for further disposal\/utilization is about 300 tons as a part of 2 projects, of which the first one has already completed and the second is in the final stage. Thus, a member of the European Business Association, Sigmas Ecology Ltd., part of the S.I.Group Consort Ltd. in Israel, has been working on the proper packaging and export of commercial batches of unusable pesticides to the plant of Tredi SAS (Seche Environnement SA) in France.<\/span><\/p>\n

The first batch in December 2019 amounted to 110 tons of hazardous waste, which was sent for disposal\/utilization from the Kherson region to the plant of Tredi SAS (Seche Environnement SA) in France. Starting from 2020, the project has continued.<\/span><\/p>\n

All works were carried out in accordance with Ukrainian and European environmental legislation, including Resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine \u21161120 of 13.07.2000, EU Regulation \u21161013 \/ 2006, Basel Convention on the Control of Transboundary Movements of Hazardous Wastes and their Disposal, Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants, etc. It is worth noting that all procedures comply with the technical instructions and the above regulations.<\/span><\/p>\n

Also, all hazardous waste has gone through rigorous testing procedures before being sent abroad. Each employee was appropriately equipped with chemical protection of the highest class to work with hazardous waste. All vehicles involved in the work were provided with ADR and IMDG certificates.<\/span><\/p>\n

Hazardous waste was packed in certified containers suitable for transportation and storage. Besides, the packaging has passed all the necessary tests for the proper use and has the appropriate certificates in accordance with international standards. That is intended for use in accordance with the ADR, IMDG, and REACH requirements.<\/span><\/p>\n

It is worth noting that Syngenta, a member of the EBA Agrochemical Committee has also joined the project, for which corporate social responsibility has a higher priority than financial rewards.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ukraine has developed quality service in waste management thanks to the established experience of Sigmas Ecology, close cooperation with world leaders in the field of hazardous waste, and expertise from respective international organizations. Therefore, we hope that this is just the beginning for Ukraine to complete the disposal of its hazardous waste. We also wish Sigmas Ecology a successful completion of the current project, as well as the next ones to come.<\/span><\/p>\n

As of today, Ukraine does not have the appropriate technologies and facilities to enable the disposal of unusable pesticides in compliance with all international standards of safety and environmental protection.<\/span><\/p>\n

In Soviet times, the situation was not much better. Back then it was acceptable to bury such waste in the so-called “cemeteries”. In other words, postpone the solution of problems and pass them on to future generations. This led to the accumulation of 8 to 12 thousand tons of such “heritage” on the balance of the state.<\/span><\/p>\n

According to international requirements, in fact, the only acceptable way to dispose of this type of hazardous waste is high-temperature incineration with special systems for afterburning and purification of exhaust gases such as dioxins and furans.<\/span><\/p>\n

Even in the EU, there are only a few plants that have the necessary technology. One of the flagship companies in this field is Tredi SAS (Seche Environnement SA) in France.<\/span><\/p>\n
