Learn. Sort for the sake of the future!

Today, we would like to touch on such a topic as the sorting of household waste and the system of their management. Ukraine has undertaken to sort all waste by types of materials, as well as to divide it into suitable for reuse, recycling and disposal.

This is stated in Article 32 of the Law of Ukraine “On Waste” (hereinafter referred to as the Law), amended with an appropriate paragraph in 2012; that is, the Law states that in order to restrict and prevent the negative impact of waste on the environment and human health, burying unprocessed (untreated) household wastes is prohibited as of January 1, 2018.

This paragraph corresponds to the two EU Directives – 1999/31/EC and 2008/98/EC – that regulate waste management in European countries, provide a clear sequence of activities that must be performed regarding waste, classify waste, and set the strategic goal of reducing the amount of waste taken away to disposal sites.

Taking into account that the system of household waste management is in general imperfect, it is necessary to implement a comprehensive approach to the waste problem.

For example, in July, the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources of Ukraine get the work on the “National Strategy for Waste Management” done. The strategy defines the main directions of state regulation in the field of waste management in the coming decades, taking into account European approaches to waste management based on the provisions of the EU Waste Framework Directive No. 2008/98/EC, in particular its basic principles – transition to a closed-loop economy, which is the heart of the sustainable development strategy, waste minimization and the manufacturer’s interest in their processing, with burial being the least acceptable option.

However, in order to get a mechanism for sorting household waste (reference: household waste includes all waste, except those formed as a result of manufacturing activities), the following is required:

attitudinal changes of Ukrainian citizens – to develop environmental literacy in relation to the environment, get used to “European-style cleanliness” and begin to sort garbage at home, deliver recyclable waste – plastic, glass, paper – to recycling centers;

garbage must be sorted directly by inhabitants of apartment houses, employees of enterprises, organizations, institutions, etc.;

organized infrastructure, including availability of:

areas near residential with separate containers for different types of waste – plastic, cardboard, metal, glass, organic and mixed waste;

separate waste collection stations, including mobile ones;

waste recycling – the introduction of new and expansion of existing capacities.

Thus, starting with the main, WITH US – by small, but sure steps, we have to pave the way to a cleaner future, because the introduction of separate waste collection does not depend on availability of containers, but on behavior and attitude of mankind to the environment. The question you need to ask yourself is: are you ready to sort waste?

Today, we would like to touch on such a topic as the sorting of household waste and the system of their management.
