Kyiv, March 17, 2025<\/b> \u2013 <\/span>Defender Media<\/span><\/a>, a new online publication dedicated to defence and military innovations, has officially launched in Ukraine. The goal of the new media is to become the main source of information for the global audience regarding the Ukrainian defence tech industry. Among other things, the aim of the new platform will be to help Ukrainian startups attract investment and connect with international partners. That is why Defender Media will publish materials in two languages from the start \u2014 English and Ukrainian.<\/span><\/p>\n

A Booming Industry in Need of Coverage<\/b><\/p>\n

According to an annual assessment by a British military think tank, global defence spending surges \u2014 reaching a record $2.2 trillion in 2024. Thus, the defence tech sector is evolving at an unprecedented pace. Countries worldwide invest in AI-powered warfare, autonomous systems, cybersecurity, electronic warfare, and next-generation unmanned vehicles. Ukraine, with its battlefield-driven innovation and fast-growing ecosystem of defence startups, stands out as the most dynamic hub in the field.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Ukrainian defence tech industry is estimated to be worth at least $1 billion. According to the Brave1 platform, over the three years of war, more than 1,500 new companies have emerged in Ukraine, producing drones, robots, electronic warfare and other innovative defence products. In 2024, investments in Ukrainian defence start-ups reached more than $50 million. This year, this figure has every chance of rising to $100 million.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cDefence tech is one of the fastest-growing industries in Ukraine and is critical to our country’s survival. Yet, until now, there has been no dedicated Ukrainian publication covering this sector. We\u2019ve fixed that. Our goal is to scale Defender Media globally.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

Defender Media’s founders are Den Smyrnov, Roman Sudolskyy, and Nik Zharov. They started working on the project in the autumn of 2024 and later secured investment from Sigma Software Labs, a corporate venture fund.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe project will be included in the investment portfolio of the Swedish-Ukrainian group of companies Sigma Software. However, like a classic startup, Defender Media will retain its identity and maintain an independent editorial policy.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

\u201cWe are actively developing defence tech expertise, investing in both strategic and more public defence companies, and last year co-founded the Defence Builder accelerator, which is already preparing the second batch of teams. At the same time, we see a big gap in the information field. There is a lack of a specialised publication to help key players navigate the Ukrainian defence industry and integrate it into the global context. Since in our Group, we always support internal entrepreneurship and look for new ideas for investment, Defender Media became a logical complement to our ecosystem. That’s why we decided to support this project.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n
