OBJECTIVES<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Ukraine is facing a triple challenge: to recover from the impact of Russia’s attacks while adapting to and addressing climate change and nature loss.<\/span><\/p>\n

In the next months and years, far-reaching decisions by the Ukrainian government and authorities, but also foreign donors, financial institutions and the private sector will determine how billions of Euros are invested for the post-war reconstruction of Ukraine. It will be crucial that those decisions are made with an eye to the future, climate- and nature-positive and with solid governance principles. This implies transparent and inclusive decision-making processes based on best available knowledge as required by the EU acquis communautaire. Major government efforts are underway to facilitate Ukraine\u2019s Restoration, including the creation of new agencies, merging of State Owned Enterprises, and adjusting the individual and institutional roles to face the new realities. In the realities of war, there is a significant risk of insufficiently incorporating environmental governance principles in the Restoration efforts, undermining their sustainability.<\/span><\/p>\n

One of the milestones of the journey to Restoration will be the Ukraine Recovery Conference on 21 and 22 June 2023 in London with its focus on mobilising business engagement at scale.<\/span><\/p>\n

Germany contributes to international discussions aiming to define a governance structure for the coordination of reconstruction efforts and recently launched a platform for reconstruction in Ukraine to facilitate networking, information provision and coordination for involved actors. Germany will also convene the Ukraine Recovery Conference in 2024. Berlin is therefore well placed for hosting a workshop on the topic of good governance in reconstruction.<\/span><\/p>\n

Motivated by the joint objective to support Ukrainian governmental and non-governmental actors in accelerating the move toward good environmental governance and EU accession of Ukraine while using the momentum of post-war recovery discussions, the Member of European Parliament <\/span>Viola von Cramon-Taubadel,\u00a0<\/span>the environmental organisation <\/span>WWF-Central and Eastern Europe<\/span> and the<\/span> Basel Institute on Governance <\/span>are inviting to the event \u201c<\/span>How to move toward good governance for a nature-positive and climate-neutral recovery of Ukraine<\/span>\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

Our workshop aims at fleshing out how governance issues jeopardise sustainable natural resource use in Ukraine and identifying mechanisms for future-oriented private and public sector investments. The results will inform the upcoming <\/span>Ukraine Recovery Conferences<\/span> in London later this year and in Germany in 2024 as well as other similar events.<\/span><\/p>\n
