More than 30\u00a0years ago, Ukraine inherited the power system with sufficiently powerful grid lines to transport electricity over hundreds of kilometers. This, in turn, required use of high-power transformers near power generation facilities that received and converted current into alternating current with power of up to 750\u00a0kV. For comparison, the European grid capacity is designed for 380\u2013500\u00a0kV. That is why Ukraine can fully satisfy its own needs in electricity, and export it.<\/p>\n
The total number of transformers on one line is difficult to imagine, because every other 500\u2013700\u00a0km, there are “receiving” transformers that stepwise convert the current and reduce the voltage to the “consumer one”. On average, a transformer substation occupies the area of approx.\u00a03\u20134\u00a0ha, that is why hitting any part of it leads to catastrophic consequences for the whole grid.<\/p>\n
Unfortunately, Ukraine does not have its own transformers, everything is imported: equipment, poles, cables, oil for transformers etc. In addition to the availability of the necessary components abroad, everything is complicated by their transportation to Ukraine.<\/p>\n
Transformers Logistics<\/strong><\/p>\n Small power transformers are usually supplied fully assembled and ready for installation. Such facilities belong to the category of oversized or project cargoes and require use of transport with a high carrying capacity, as the weight can reach tens and hundreds of tons, rigging works and special attention during the delivery, because the transformer contains fragile elements.<\/p>\n When transporting certain transformers, a highway survey is involved, that is, the entire route examination. As a result, a specific route agreed with the state authorities (if necessary) and road services, and a list of arrangement and technical measures that shall be performed to ensure the reliability of such cargo transportation, are determined. In most cases, transformer transportation is even accompanied by a road inspection convoy.<\/p>\n “Among the implemented projects, our portfolio included the simultaneous transportation of four transformers, one part (body) of which weighed more than 108\u00a0tons. All transformers were equipped with motion sensors that responded to shocks and sudden movements. In general, <\/em>such transportations require non-standard approaches and maximum involvement, because all the smallest details must be considered”,\u00a0<\/em>\u2014 Andrii Skydanchuk, Head of Oversized Cargo Transportation Department, DSV\u00a0Projects.<\/strong><\/p>\n When importing project cargo, it is important to have a reliable logistics partner who will work with all the world’s leading sea lines and airlines, coordinate cargo loading, unloading and handling at the port\/airport, develop special fastening and packing schemes, deal with customs formalities and, at the same time, has great experience and competent experts with high qualifications.<\/p>\n The key thing to remember is that there are no two identical cases of oversized cargo transportation, even if we are talking about the same transformers.
