For almost four years the agrochemical business has been waiting for this decision.<\/p>\n\t<div class=\"blockquote-custom-big animate-block animate-block--before animate-block--to-right\">\n\n\t\t<div class=\"quote-header\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/new.eba.com.ua\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Victor_Pogorilyi.jpg\">\n\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"name\">Victor Pogorily<\/span>\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"position\">Coordinator of the Agrochemical Committee<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<blockquote class=\"blockquote-custom\">\n\t\t\t\tBy 2013, the mechanism of the Basel Convention in Ukraine was partially working and business could export unsuitable waste abroad for proper utilization. However, it was suspended. We faced a situation when we didn\u2019t have any companies that could safely dispose this category of waste. And they were accumulated, and even worse - thoughtlessly buried. Obviously, this has a negative effect on the environment. Prior to that, such utilization is a very complicated and investment-intensive technology, requiring ovens costing tens of millions of hryvnias.\n\t\t\t<\/blockquote>\n\t\t\t\t\n\t<\/div>\n\n<p>Thus, since the times of the USSR <strong>more than 8.5 thousand tons of unsuitable and prohibited pesticides accumulated in Ukraine<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Even in the EU, there are only a few factories that can dispose of this kind of waste. So, in fact, the only possible way out of the situation is to use the mechanism of the Basel Convention which is about controlling transboundary movements of hazardous wastes and their disposal. So, because of the lack of capacity within the country, the relevant government agencies (in our case, the Ministry of Environmental Protection) will agree on <strong>the transboundary movement of unsuitable pesticides for their proper utilization in a country with appropriate technologies<\/strong> according to the Convention.<\/p>\n<p>The international agrochemical business community welcomes the adoption of these legislative changes that open up opportunities for environmentally safe disposal of unsuitable pesticides.
