Committee hearings on maritime security and freedom of navigation in the Azov-Black Sea basin

15/ 06/ 2023
Daria Sichkar, the Manager of the EBA Logistics Committee, joined the committee hearings in the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine on maritime security and freedom of navigation in the Azov-Black Sea basin, which took place on June 13. The meeting was attended by MPs of Ukraine, representatives of the Presidents Office, the National Security and Defense Council, ministries, agencies, businesses, and experts to discuss maritime security in the context of aggression and the destruction of sea transportation infrastructure. The safety and freedom of navigation for commercial vessels in the Black Sea waters can boost Ukraines economic recovery. Therefore, in her speech, the representative of the Association emphasized the importance of uniting efforts to implement a strategy for the full unblocking of Ukrainian Black Sea ports for commercial transportation of all types of cargo. Firstly, it is necessary to ensure the safety of navigation, including the demining of maritime territories. Secondly, creating insurance programs to protect shipping companies involved in direct trade with Ukraine from military risks is crucial. The Ukrainian government has already adopted the relevant Procedure that compensates for damage caused to vessels during their stay in Ukrainian territorial waters. The business is ready to actively participate in finding suitable solutions and supporting the resumption of commercial transportation once safe conditions are in place.
